| Sauce Experiment |
[12th. July, 2009|06:31 pm] |
So I got a new (and better) immersion blender for my birthday, and tonight I put it to work (on something other than milkshakes). The stuff in the fridge wanted to be sweet and sour chicken, so I needed a sauce. Here's what I put in: (all measurements wildly approximated)
1 c. peach preserves 1/2 c. apple cider vinegar 1 t. green jalapeno Tabasco 1 T. olive oil 1 green onion, torn into 1" pieces (green part only)
The blender made short work of the sauce, and it turned out thick and smooth, and very tasty. I sauteed some cubed chicken breast that had been coated with flour and season-all and tossed the sauce over it. The breading on the chicken turned out to be a bad idea, as it turned the sauce into a gloppy mess, but the flavor was still good. I had half the sauce left over, and it may get put over pork chops later in the week. |

At least that's what I think the fabric was intended for back in the day. But now the new dress is finished.

| {{Sewing}} Taking a break... |
[12th. July, 2009|02:20 pm] |
Actually, it's a late lunch break. Gives me time to continue pre-shrinking fabric.
I'm trying to finish up a few garb projects (must find more black lace) and going through the fabric in the garage. I don't really think of it as a studio anymore because there is just too much stuff in there and there is not a lot of room to work. I hope to get some shirts and maybe a doublet or two made up this week and up on etsy. Maybe some other fun stuff.
Right now, I'm trying to figure out what to eat. I'm HUNGRY!!! |

| So Far, This Morning.... |

Remind me not to do a huge dye project immediately upon waking up. It's only 1:20 and I'm utterly exhausted. Fortunately, I don't have anything else I have to do today, other than cook dinner and some studying this evening.
The shibori block dyeing turned out really nice and, once the fabric is done rinsing and drying, I'll be taking pictures of it. I won't be able to have pictures of the completed costume until after the event, but the dye effects on the fabric look pretty cool and I thought you all might want to see them before I cut it up to make the costume.
My nails are a mess right now, though, because I was using black dye. I look like I've been digging in mud with my bare hands. Well, this is the reason I don't bother doing my nails anymore; I do too much handiwork and I'd just end up tearing them up anyway.
Once the fabric's done rinsing, I'll hang it up to dry, then go grab something to eat. After that, I think I'm going to embroider for most of the afternoon, though there may be a quick store run to pick up some bleach (for the washing machine) and thinner needles. I didn't bring my full sewing kit with me to Nigel's and all of the needles he has on hand are too thick to do any sort of beading (I'm doing some light beading along with the embroidery). |

| What is this belt-pouch thingy? |
[12th. July, 2009|11:05 am] |
I'm making garb based on this illustration titled The Annunciation to the Shepherds:

Its from a French book of hours from the late 15th century. The dress and headgear are easy. I'm sorta stumped about the wrap-around-the-waist pouches, though. In the illustration above, it looks like a belt on the woman, however, it's not. Here are the front views of other people in the same illustration:

In the illustration below, it's a back view, you can see that each of these shepherds has one and it's some kind of pouch. Or sleeping roll? Though it doens't look bulky enough for that.

I've never seen any construction given for these in any garb class I've taken or read about. Has anyone worked with these? Can you tell me anything about them? Barring that, does anyone just want to give an opinion?
Thanks!
